Review: The Iron Knight by Julie Kagawa.
Rowena's review of The Iron Knight (The Iron Fae #4) by Julie Kagawa.
Main Character: Prince Ash
Love Interest: Meghan Chase
My name—my True Name—is Ashallayn’ darkmyr Tallyn. I am the last remaining son of Mab, Queen of the Unseelie Court. And I am dead to her. My fall began, as many stories do, with a girl .
To cold faery prince Ash, love was a weakness for mortals and fools. His own love had died a horrible death, killing any gentler feelings the Winter prince might have had. Or so he thought.
Then Meghan Chase—a half human, half fey slip of a girl—smashed through his barricades, binding him to her irrevocably with his oath to be her knight. And when all of Faery nearly fell to the Iron fey, she severed their bond to save his life. Meghan is now the Iron Queen, ruler of a realm where no Winter or Summer fey can survive.
With the unwelcome company of his archrival, Summer Court prankster Puck, and the infuriating cait sith Grimalkin, Ash begins a journey he is bound to see through to its end—a quest to find a way to honor his vow to stand by Meghan's side.
To survive in the Iron Realm, Ash must have a soul and a mortal body. But the tests he must face to earn these things are impossible. And along the way Ash learns something that changes everything. A truth that challenges his darkest beliefs and shows him that, sometimes, it takes more than courage to make the ultimate sacrifice.
This is the last book in the Iron Fae series. What makes this book different is that it's told from Prince Ash's (the Ice Prince) point of view. I think of all of the books in this series, this book was my favorite and it had a lot to do with Ash. I adored Ash in the previous books, even when he was being a meany pants but in the other books, I wanted more from Ash. I wanted to get into his head, know what he was thinking and so when we were gifted with this book, I freaking loved it. I ate it all up.
Kagawa does a fabulous job of placing you right in the middle of this fantastic, colorful world where anything and everything happens. So many characters, so many personalities and it made the story just that much more interesting. There were times when the story dragged but the overall story was so interesting and so swoonworthy. I mean, Ash went on a quest to become human. For Meghan. She's the new ruler of the Iron kingdom and we all know that the iron fae don't mix well with the winter and summer courts. If he has any chance of a happy ending with Meghan, he's going to go through with this and how romantic is that?
Over the course of this book, I just loved Ash more and more. He was so freaking adorable, the things he did for Meghan, the lengths that he went to be with her was all just so bleeping cute. His quest was riddled with adventure of all sorts and it made for an interesting story. The story was colorful, it was gripping and the cast of characters that we meet and see over the course of the book was charming.
It was so good to finally get inside Ash's head. I mean, the guy that we all know and love is so cold and aloof but that's the way that he was raised. He was raised that showing any kind of emotion is weak and he wasn't weak. He had to be strong at every turn and I couldn't really blame him since look at who his brothers are.
The story weaved itself around me and I enjoyed the ride. It wasn't the most perfect of books but I enjoyed the heck out of it anyway. Ash's personality shined bright for me and I adored the hell out of him. I enjoyed his journey and as much as I enjoyed him and all of his goodness, I missed Meghan. I missed her thoughts and well, just her. Aside from that, this book was enjoyable and it was a really great ending to a fabulous series. I definitely recommend it to lovers of YA fantasy and of this series and the author.
