Guest Review: Love's Fortress by Samantha Kane

Tracy’s review of Love’s Fortress (Brother’s in Arms #7) by Samantha Kane

Gideon North wants a wife. She must be practical and hardworking. But above all, she must have a hearty constitution. Horribly injured and scarred from his Peninsular War service, Gideon does not want to deal with a wife who flinches every time she looks at him.

Gideon’s estate manager Charles Borden was his sergeant in the war. Inseparable but almost always at odds, the two men agree that Sarah Whitley is the perfect wife for Gideon. Strong, beautiful and intelligent with a dry sense of humor, Sarah bears her own marks from a life spent in the shadows.

When Sarah learns to let go of her past fears, she frees both men to acknowledge the love and attraction that has always existed between them. The three become intimate but the eroticism of their encounters in the bedroom does not guarantee happiness. Gideon’s defenses mire them in the past. Only together can Sarah and Charles break through to build a future with Gideon.

Sarah Whitley has been in the shadows most of her life. Hiding her face, that bears a large port-wine stain, from everyone except her large family. Being the oldest of 11 children she longs for a family of her own. She had been taking care of her father’s after her mother died but now her father has remarried and Sarah feels at odds. When she sees Gideon she feels almost like she’s come home. Gideon has scars on his face from the war and Sarah learns that she should not hide because she is beautiful despite the birthmark

Gideon though, is unsure of himself and his reception by Sarah on their wedding night. Gideon asks his friend Charles to assist him with Sarah. All three are a bit uncomfortable at first but understanding soon arises with Sarah and she’s more than accepting of Charles’ role in their bed. Love between the three, as well as Gideon’s acceptance of his feelings for Charles blossom and the three are quite happy…or so they think.

Yes, Gideon taught Sarah to be more accepting of herself, but he apparently can’t take his own advice and seeks treatment for his scars, bringing a rift between the threesome.

Love’s Fortress brings to us the story of men who have been not only emotionally scarred by the wars but also physically. I applaud Kane for doing such a fantastic job of relaying the inner struggle that these two men suffered. Sarah played such a catalytic role in the relationship between Gideon and Charles but also served as a healing balm to their war wounds both visible and invisible.

This is a wonderful addition to the Brothers in Arms series. Each book has shown me a new perspective of the Napoleonic wars and their consequences. It’s so wonderful to see each of the men come to terms with life and love after the wars are through. Kane has a way of bringing out the deep, dark issues that affect the men, but the stories are not deep or dark. I can’t wait for the next book!
