Author Alert: Debbie Macomber in Northern California!

For those who live in/near Sacramento, Debbie Macomber will be at the Arden Fair Mall on June 7th. She's promoting the third book in her Knitting trilogy. I've read the first two books. They are light, fluffy, feel good stories about a group of women who get together at a yarn store to knit - for themselves and for various charities - and how they connect. Here is an excerpt from the newspaper article:

With an incredible 60 million books in print, Macomber is clearly one of the masters of the romance genre and a groundbreaker in contemporary women's fiction.

"My goal is to have women of all ages identify with the characters in my books," she has said in interviews. "I love it when readers let me know that they've passed my books on to their mothers or their daughters."

Macomber has been impressively prolific since making her debut 25 years ago. She has written 13 series (encompassing 69 books) and more than 60 stand-alone novels, and is a regular on national best-seller lists. In recent years, she has moved from pure romance into more generalized women's fiction.

Her new novel is "Back on Blossom Street" (Mira, $24.95, 400 pages), which reunites some of the characters from two previous related tales, "The Shop on Blossom Street" (2004) and "A Good Yarn" (2006).

It was Macomber's ongoing passion for knitting that led her to write the Seattle-based fiction trilogy. At its heart are knitting classes held regularly at a store called A Good Yarn. The classes serve to bring together women of disparate backgrounds who become friends and help each other.

In "Back on Blossom Street," the story begins with a flower shop opening next door to Lydia Goetz's knitting store, which is a hub of activity and the focus of the action. Drama, romance, tension and humor soon envelop the mutually supportive members of the women's knitting group.

A companion knitting pattern book has been published to coincide with the novel. "Knit Along With Debbie Macomber: Back on Blossom Street" (Leisure Arts, $12.99, 48 pages) contains 12 knitting designs.

Macomber will appear for The Bee Book Club at 6 p.m. June 7 in the pedestrian area in front of the Nordstrom department store at Arden Fair mall, 1689 Arden Way. Seating will begin at 5:15 p.m. on a first-come basis. For more information: (916) 321-1128.

Through June 7, these bookstores will offer a 30 percent discount on "Back on Blossom Street": Borders, Borders Express, Barnes & Noble, East-West Bookstore, Underground Books, the Avid Reader in Sacramento, the Avid Reader in Davis, Time Tested Books, the Hornet Bookstore at CSUS, the UC Davis Bookstore and the Next Chapter in Woodland.

I don't know if I'll make there on time but looks like it'll be interesting.
